MOUNTAINEERING TERMS

 

cairn - A distinctive pile of stones placed to designate a summit or mark a trail, often above the treeline.

 

crampons - Metal framework with spikes attached to boots to increase safety on snow and ice.

 

belay - To protect a roped climber from falling by passing the rope through, or around, something to hold him from above.

 

carabiner - Metal rings with spring-loaded gates, used as connectors. Usually oval or roughly D shaped.

 

Col - A small pass or "saddle" between two peaks.

 

Ice Axe - A tool used for safety and balance, having a pick head and a spike at the opposite end of a shaft.
